14:10 Ubuntu gets official version Mate Desktop




Canonical has a new Ubuntu variant based on the Mate desktop approved as an official version. A first alpha release of Ubuntu Mate 14:10, where the Mate desktop replaces the Unity environment, can already be retrieved from the makers.

Ubuntu Mate Mate offers users a more traditional desktop environment than Unity and is largely based on the interface of GNOME 2.x. In addition to a classic desktop has lower system requirements. Among other Linux Mint uses Mate, but an official Ubuntu variant lacking. Now Ubuntu Mate the approval has been given by Canonical, it can call itself an official Ubuntu variant, Kubuntu and Xubuntu next example.

Ubuntu Mate is now available in an early alpha version. This runs on the basis of the under construction Ubuntu 14.10, the release which has been codenamed Utopic Unicorn. The OS requires at least a Pentium III and 512MB of RAM, and is both a 32bit and 64bit edition available. The iso images are slightly less than 900MB hard.
