3D-printer is capable of correcting NSTRMNT printable objects




Conventional 3D printers are used to create objects layer by layer method for three-dimensional model. In Southern California Institute of Architecture created method 3D -printing using a liquid resin and a gel, which gives a new degree of freedom.

NSTRMNT printer uses a 6-axis robotic arm Stäubli Robotics with a peristaltic pump. Printing is performed by injecting liquid resin into a gel which serves as a support structure for the object being printed. Arduino board with a microcontroller controls the flow of resin. Any failed part of the 3D-object can be removed by changing the pump to suction.

After printing, the object of the liquid resin for one to two minutes is treated with ultraviolet light, which gives structure to take solid form.


In pump integrated ultraviolet LEDs, but are less effective. The gel can be used repeatedly until it dries. It may last for a few months – the author says Brian Harms development.

The current version of NSTRMNT prints with a resolution of about 1/16 inch (about 1.6 mm). Resolution depends on the diameter of the needle used to extrude the resin. The thinner the needle, the higher the quality of the printing.
