the nature of their work to change in whole or in part due to digital transformation

A recent annual Gartner senior IT survey shows that digital transformation efforts and the increasing adoption of technological innovations are bearing the brunt of change in the nature of IT chiefs’ job. As business leaders rush to embrace digital work , the remainder of this year and 2018 will be a pivotal stage for senior IT officials who seek to keep them from the path of evolution.

The survey noted that the position of IT chiefs in enterprises is shifting from an executive to a business development officer, from a function that controls IT spending and processes to a more important function of revenue development and data investment.

Gartner analysts recently presented the results of the survey at the Gartner Technology Conference in Orlando, United States. The Gartner 2018 Senior IT Officers’ Survey collected a record of 3,160 participants from 98 countries and represented the entire business sector.

The total revenue / expenditure budget for government companies and institutions in which participants work was about $ 13 trillion, and total spending on IT was about $ 277 billion. The survey was designed to divide participants into three hierarchical groups according to their level of performance in terms of digital transformation efforts, which were ranked as the best, followed by traditional ones, while the list of delays included the digital shift from the heads of IT.

The results of the survey indicate that 95% of senior IT officials expect the nature of their work to change completely or partially due to digital transformation. While IT operations management is becoming more and more efficient, the time spent by IT chiefs on these tasks will diminish rapidly.

Those who participated in the survey indicated that the most significant change in the nature of the work of the senior IT officer would be the shift to leadership of change initiatives, followed by greater responsibilities and capabilities. Ultimately, IT chiefs will end up away from traditional procedural tasks in other sectors of the business world, such as institutional innovation management and capacity building.

“The nature of IT business leaders must grow and evolve as digital businesses expand exponentially and breakthrough technologies such as smart devices and advanced data analysis techniques reach the general public,” said Andy Russell-Jones, vice president and renowned analyst at Gartner. “While IT operations remain at the heart of the business, the focus is increasingly on delivering a broader range of goals to their organizations.”

The survey showed that most IT chiefs believe that emerging technology trends, especially those related to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, will inevitably change the nature of their future work. While cybersecurity issues continue to pose a threat to the business environment around the world in 2018, 95% of the respondents said they expect the risks to information security to increase and thus affect their institutions.

“As a result of heightened risk, digital security is at the forefront of the IT agenda, with 35% of respondents saying they have already spent digital data protection technologies, while 36% Of them are in the process of planning to adopt such techniques. The survey also revealed that there is a growing growth of artificial intelligence technologies in the institutions where these participants work. ”

The survey revealed that 84% of the participants are responsible for parts of the work outside the framework of what is usually carried out by IT departments, especially the responsibilities related to innovation and change initiatives. Seventy-nine percent of respondents also said that digital work helps their organizations to be “more ready to change”, which confirms that the time is right for changes to IT departments now, which will also make the transition in the nature of IT managers’ Smooth and easy.
