Many businesses take the CES as the time to introduce a lot of new products to the public, but there are also companies that it easy to do. Acer introduced in Las Vegas just three models: an all-in-one with ChromeOS, ChromeOS with a laptop and a new convertible. The Taiwanese giant was therefore not at the show itself but in a hotel a bit further. We still could get a first glimpse of the new hardware, where our attention was focused on the new convertible: the switch 12S.

Acer Aspire Switch 12S The name Switch 12S suggests that we are dealing with an enhanced version of Switch 12, which went on sale about a year ago. However, there appears to have changed a lot and besides the screen size of 12.5 “, the two convertibles little in common. The Switch 12 was a striking appearance of a tablet with a built-in stand and a detachable keyboard that was in use in different ways . This modular design apparently was not a success because the switch 12S is Acer back to the classic design of a detachable tablet to a keyboard dock, which we know from the Switch 10 and 11.

That similar design makes the switch 12 not to Switch 11 with a larger screen size; Acer has made clear other material choices. Synthetic find only return the keys on your keyboard; tablet and dock are made entirely of metal, probably aluminum. The front of the tablet is over the entire surface with a glass plate, behind which the laminated full-hd-ips-panel is stuck, with openings at the bottom for the speakers, which are directed forwards.

Through the use of single metal and glass will feel securely to the tablet, firmer than the Switch 12 with a plastic housing. Additionally, there are more connections available. On the tablet itself the micro HDMI connector still offers the possibility to connect an external display, but there’s also a USB port c available, which also supports thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt port can be used to connect the Acer Graphics Dock. Although the Acer Graphics Dock has not yet revealed the name suggests that this is a dock with an external video card.

The USB-c-connection is not used to load the tablet. On the one hand it a miss that provides a separate power connection again, on the other hand, the USB-C-terminal thereby free to use while charging the tablet. Finally, strikes on the outside is the Intel Real Sense camera. Which sits at the back, so log in using Windows Hello, such as the Surface Pro 4 is not possible and the camera is really meant to be there to experience 3D images.
Keyboard Dock

Who wants to use a standard USB connectors can turn to the keyboard dock, which left and right USB port is placed. In order not to interfere with the lines of the rounded design involves the use is made of a sort of cover, behind which the connections partly hidden.

Acer Aspire Switch 12S What is striking is the way in which the communication takes place with the tablet. This usually occurs via bluetooth or manufacturers use a proprietary connector. When the switch 12S, Acer has chosen to not only use the gold “feet” in the hinge to hold the tablet in place, but also to communicate with keyboard dock with tablet flow through them. How it works and whether it can use the full speed of the USB connections, we will have to test in an extensive review. According to the present Acer-collaborator, the speed, in any case, is not a problem.

The tablet is held by a magnet and, moreover, by the legs firmly in place. In addition, the tablet will be slightly forward and backward wobble, but that is unavoidable in this type of constructions. It is unfortunate that the low weight of the keyboard dock means that the dock can go ‘hover’ if you open up to fold the hinge. The same problem was already in the Aspire Switch 10.
Finally

Acer seems to be 12S to come back from the bold design of the Switch 12 and gives the new model a ‘normal’ appearance along with keyboard dock. It is used a lot of metal and glass, making the 12S not only looks good but also feels sturdy. The keyboard dock provides two standard USB ports, alongside the USB c connector on the tablet itself, which you can use as an ordinary laptop 12S. The only drawback that during this hands-on could find is that the dock is not exactly level remains when the laptop fully open.

The switch 12S that we might try was equipped with a full-HD screen, a Core m3 6y30 processor and 4GB of memory. However, there will also be versions appear with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels and 8GB memory, while 128 or 256GB of SSD’s available. The 12S will be a lot more expensive than ordinary Switch 12 and comes in February for a price starting at 1200 euro.
