Find a Question:
Akamai clout ‘BillGates’ botnet of Linux machines increases
A botnet consisting of Linux systems infected with malware called Bill Gates is doing a march, Akamai claims based on research. The botnet could be used for DDoS attacks and have gained momentum after previous actions against the XOR botnet.
Akamai sticks in its security advisory from the Security Intelligence Research Team labeled as’ high risk factor in Bill Gates botnet. According to Akamai was the malware that is used for the botnet for the first discovered in 2014 by a Russian IT-site and builds the malware upon the source of the Elknot malware. The origin could lie in Asia and the botnet pointing with his DDoS attacks also shutting down particularly Asian game companies, the report said.
The attacks have similarities with those of the XOR botnet, previously among Asian companies thrashing but was dismantled last year. There is a chance that the managers of the XOR thread with Bill Gates network have resumed suspects Akamai.
The malware creates a builder that allows attackers to make their own versions of Bill Gates. The resulting toolkit can perform DDoS attacks, open doors and take a whole system. End of 2015 the research team detected an attack with a total distributed, bandbreeddte 308Gbit / s. The Bill Gates-malware infects Linux systems like XOR not directly through vulnerabilities but by searching the Internet for at least secure ssh servers and via brute force behind passwords.
As often with screening the outcome can not be separated from the commercial interests of the inquiring party, in this case, Akamai provides services to protect against DDoS attacks.
