Amazon.com today announced the launch of Sumerian, a new tool to help people easily develop 3D 3D experiences for a wide range of platforms, bringing the company into the fast-growing virtual reality market.

Sumerian, which is currently based on web browsers, is available in a limited trial. And when launched will allow developers to develop 3D objects in scenes that can be used in virtual reality applications and enhanced. It includes a library of objects full of models that developers can exploit, and supports the import of other objects.

Moreover, developers can access a host of “hosts”, three-dimensional characters that developers can customize to interact with the end-user. These hosts complement Amazon’s artificial intelligence services, Polly and Lex, to provide natural language capabilities similar to those supported by Alexa’s digital assistant.

According to the e-commerce giant, Sumerian is designed to be simple enough to be used even by inexperienced developers to build 3D experiences while maintaining the capacity to create compelling content.

Amazon added that Sumarian is also integrating AWS’s cloud computing service to attract gaming developers. The company has already released a gaming engine that is supposed to provide the platform for these people to build interactive experiences.

The three-dimensional experiments built by Sumerian correspond to the famous virtual reality glasses, such as HTC Five and Okolos Rift, as well as iPhone phones. In the near future, the tool will also support the construction of enhanced reality scenes for Android operating systems compatible with the ARCore platform.

One of the major advantages of Sumarian is its ability to import data from Unity projects, the most popular gaming engine among developers and used by developers of enhanced and virtual reality.
