Amazon takes over manufacturer of mesh routers Eero

Amazon has announced the acquisition of Eero, an American manufacturer of mesh routers. By having access to router technology, Amazon will soon simplify it for consumers to connect their smart home devices.

Amazon could use the technology among other things to streamline the installation of Alexa-compatible gadgets. It is not clear how much money is involved in the acquisition. Eero is one of several manufacturers of network equipment that focuses on mesh routers. The company only delivers in the US and Canada and if there are plans to serve Europe is unknown.

Mesh routers are generally less affected by dead Wi-Fi zones with little to no signal. Instead of a single router, the system uses multiple access points in the home. The devices also require little maintenance: updates are installed automatically and in the event of a malfunction the router tries to solve the problem itself, using instructions via the internet.

According to The Verge , existing Eero users will not all be happy with the takeover by Amazon . According to the site, the e-commerce giant may thus gain access to even more valuable data about the user. Amazon also previously took over Ring, the manufacturer behind the eponymous smart doorbell.
