AMD has after Microsoft and Sony new customer for custom apu

AMD has a new customer for its custom APUs. AMD makes such chips also include Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft Xbox One. It is a semi-custom chip for a game console, reducing the chance there is that it is Nintendo’s NX.

AMD Lisa Su AMD last quarter started with the design of a new semi-custom chip: APUs that matches the company on behalf of customers to specific needs. “Last year we announced to all on two new designs that ensure roughly a billion dollars in revenue and produced on a large scale in the second half of 2016. We started last quarter with a new design,” said AMD Director Lisa Su at the presentation of the quarterly figures.

Su expects a strong year for revenue from chips for game consoles. “If we add some of the new design wins to give us the potential to grow in the second half of the year,” she continued. The agreements were concluded on the basis of confidentiality so details can not give them. Late last year AMD had hinted that the two design wins there is a x86 and ARM chip.

There is a chance that in the x86 APU for the chip for the new device goes where Nintendo called NX working on. The Wii already has a GPU from AMD, the GX2, but the CPU is still based on the IBM PowerPC architecture. This platform seems waning and Microsoft and Sony have already switched to x86 for their consoles. The combination of APU with AMD GPU is advantageous in terms of consumption and performance.

AMD can successfully be semi-custom chips to good use. The company is struggling with falling demand for its APUs by poor PC sales. Revenue from AMD came in at $ 942 million, a decrease of 34.6 percent compared to last year. Converted is currently 865 million. The quarterly loss was $ 181 million, where it was a year ago, $ 36 million. The turnover of the Computing and Graphics branch fell by as much as 54.2
