AMD launches FirePro S9170 graphics card with 32GB memory

AMD has announced a new graphics card in the FirePro S series. The FirePro S9170 uses the same GPU as the S9150, but requires twice as much memory and is clocked slightly higher.

The cards from the FirePro S series are designed for servers that use the GPU for HPC applications. The FirePro S9170 should not be seen as AMD as a replacement for the S9150, but is an addition to the line. The biggest difference with the S9150 is the amount of GDDR5 memory, which doubled from 16GB to 32GB for the S9150 for the S9170.

For the S9100 series is AMD using ‘Hawaii’ GPU’s. The GPU is the S9170 clocked at up to 930MHz compared to 900MHz on the FirePro S9150, which is slightly more compute power yields for the new FirePro. The TDP therefore be increased to 275 watts, AMD has already indicated that the S9170 can also be configured on 235 watts. Later in the third quarter, AMD will deliver the new FirePro programs to server makers like HP, Dell and SuperMicro.
