Removal of ammonia from polluted waters is one of the interesting topics of environmental researchers. Ammonia exists in waters due to incomplete biological degradation of nitrogenous matter Main sources of ammonia pollution are the discharges from municipal, industrial and agricultural sites.

Ammonia causes metabolic toxicity and interferences with energy metabolism in the brain.
Ashes of leaves of Phyllanthus Niruri , Annona squamosa , Calotropis Zygantia , Tridax procumbens, Morinda tinctoria and Azadirachta indica are found to extract ammonia to an extent of 99.0%, 98.0%, 88.0%, 90.0%, 87.0% and 97.0% respectively at pH:5

Other study showed that Enteromorpha intestinalis would be the most efficient algal organism for utilisation of nitrate and ammonium in Chilika Lake>
