Android N contains code to support applications running in separate windows

The code of Android N contains references to a function to run apps in windows. The feature is not yet usable. The code could indicate that Google Android bring to desktops and laptops, something that had previously rumored.

Ars Technica found in include system files as a framework-res.apk and SystemUI references to the function, which freeform windows’ seems to be called. The windows have buttons “close” and “maximize”, suggesting that it works like windows in mainstream operating systems for desktops. Google calls the function in the developer documentation for Android N.

The function is not active in the first preview of Android N , Google last week put online, says an employee of the company. The function will be reserved according to the documentation of larger devices, but it is unknown to be met devices. Android N does include a split-screen mode.

The windows could be a prelude to Android on desktops and laptops, something that Google are operating systems Android and Chrome OS would want to merge. There is already a fork of Android with windows Remix OS .
