Apple needs to pay $ 626 million jury to VirnetX

A Texas jury has decided that Apple 625.6 million dollars, converted about 565 million euros, must be paid to patent holder VirnetX. The jury found that Apple was guilty of violating four patents owned VirnetX.

Apple company logo The form which has filled the jury shows that the jury found that Apple was guilty of patent infringement in any of the claims under discussion. For violating the first two patents, the jury found that $ 334.9 million was to be paid. The other two patents was determined an amount of 290.7 million dollars.

According VirnetX make Apple’s VPN on Demand, FaceTime and iMessage features infringe its patents. It involves patents 6,502,135 , 7,490,151 , 7,418,504 and 7,921,211 , in which the central theme is the establishment of secure communications and networking. The jury agreed with the patent troll once on each of the claims that were included in the lawsuit.

In 2013, was there even a matter between VirnetX and Apple going. Then it came to the ‘Always’ feature that iOS devices had their VPN functionality. With this feature, it was possible to automatically make a VPN to connect to an iOS device. Apple then decided to remove the feature from new devices, but do not disable all sold iPhones and iPads.

VirnetX is a patent holder who already earns revenue from holding patents. In 2012, a jury had decided that Apple had to pay 368 million dollars to VirnetX. The patent troll even wanted a percent of sales of iPhones and iPads. On appeal were both dismissed 368 million as the requirement for a percentage of sales.

In the past VirnetX already managed to win business. A patent case with Microsoft gave the company $ 200 million in a settlement. Microsoft later paid the patent troll another $ 23 million to terminate the VirnetX claims about the Skype infringed on its patents.
