Apple’s “Spaceship” is late and is significantly more expensive

Apple’s new campus, also called “Spaceship”, should be “the best office building in the world” according to Steve Jobs. One of the most expensive anyway it should be and it is probably a little more expensive, instead of $ 3 billion, is now expected to total cost of nearly $ 5 billion, according to various sources.

In addition, the completion date was moved according to Bloomberg Businessweek backwards: Instead of 2015 are Apple employees can only move in 2016. Reason for the delay should be that Apple and the architects are still looking for ways to reduce costs by one billion dollars, before doing anything else. Budget overruns and schedule shifts are not uncommon in such major projects and no specialty of the public sector in Germany – but what little comfort for those in charge of Stuttgart is likely to be 21, BER, or the Elbe Philharmonic Hall. But perhaps such delays and budget overruns are so cool now – after all, Apple is indeed cool and if the do it that way, then that’s just too cool 😉

What Apple’s new campus with continuous large construction sites in Germany also has in common: They are ambitious projects to be modern, and which are of course also about prestige. After all, Steve Jobs had personally presented the project to the Cupertino City Council. He raised it, the cost:

[…] There is not a straight piece of glass on the whole building … and as you know if you build things, this is not the cheapest way to build them.

How much does it really was at the end we will probably not know until after the completion or at least have some idea of. Jeopardized the project by increasing the costs but hardly, after all, Apple has a few billion dollars on the high edge.
