Arkyd: Public Space Telescope

A private company Planetary Resources , which intends to establish production of raw materials on asteroids, has announced plans to launch the world’s first public space telescope . The project was called Arkyd.

Like the observatory Hubble, Arkyd designed to monitor the depths of space. The machine will take pictures at high resolution. But unlike Hubble , the telescope will have access Arkyd everyone who is interested in science and space. For example, students in the classroom Astronomy.

Eric Anderson, co-founder of Planetary Resources, examines the telescope as an unprecedented research tool.

“We seem to set the camera on the shoulder of Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of the new world. You literally get a chance to explore the solar system, “- says Anderson.

The project also involved Arkyd company Virgin Galactic, which is developing small satellites for placing into Earth orbit. Planetary Resources considers the Museum of Flight in Seattle as a potential place of partial assembly telescope Arkyd, making the production process is open and accessible to the public.

“Our goal – to democratize access to space. For many years, it was all worth very expensive and serve military needs, “- says co-founder Peter Diamandis.

To raise funds to run the company Planetary Resources Arkyd uses kraudfandingovuyu platform Kickstarter. The day after the start of the project the project raised more than 200,000 dollars. The money comes every minute. To start the project requires $ 1 million.

To support the project, it is enough to donate one dollar. The most active participants will have access to additional features, for example, point the camera at the desired location ($ 200) or load your own videos into orbit (2500 dollars).

Although Planetary Resources nothing to do with NASA, Space Agency supports the transfer of experience and innovation of private companies in the space industry.

“The objective of the national space policy is to create conditions for the development of commercial space companies, based on past success, allowing NASA to focus on an ambitious program of deeper study of human space exploration, including the people to carry out the first flight to asteroids and Mars,” – says the press- NASA Secretary David Weaver.

Data obtained with a telescope Arkyd, will be later used for the analysis of small planets and the development of open source software and hardware.

Last year, Diamandis and Anderson announced their intention to start production of precious metals in the near-Earth asteroids by the end of 2013. Since that time, Planetary Resources has increased its staff by half.

The company gained the support of many influential people, including Larry Page and Eric Schmidt.
