ASML sells production-ready EUV chip machines to TSMC




ASML has announced that the two NXE: 3350B chip machines based on EUV lithography technique has been sold to TSMC. These are the first EUV machines that will use TSMC for production. The chip company had already testing machines.

The EUV-machines, wherein EUV stands for extreme ultraviolet light, may be used to etch complex circuit patterns on chips. The EUV technology currently in use have to be the immersion lithography in the chip production to follow . Chip Machine Builder ASML delivered the first EUV systems last year to include Intel, Samsung and TSMC. The latter has now placed another big order: TSMC will next year two new EUV machines from the NXE: 3350B received series. The devices cost 70 million euros each. In addition to two previously ASML TSMC will machines supplied from the NXE: 3300B upgrade series. These machines were especially designed to test the technology, while the NXE: 3350B as actual production systems have to serve.

According ASML is the chip technology based on EUV lithography technique on break now more and more companies buy EUV devices. EUV is even smaller structures on a chip as possible so that the transistor density is to increase still further. The technology is not only useful for processors but also DRAM and NAND chips.

ASML think that thanks to the EUV technique Moore’s Law in the next decade will continue. This law states roughly that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles every two years. The company also expects that the deep-UV technology will be used to develop processors with several layers. Furthermore, the chip production could be carried out more efficiently thanks to the so-called holistic lithography -productiemethodes ASML.

In addition to the publication of a new order for its EUV chip machines speaks ASML also expects that sales will grow significantly in the coming years. In 2020 this even should be around 10 billion euros, almost doubling the turnover of 5.2 billion euros last year.

By 2016 or 2017, the use of EUV according to ASML will cover the costs. In October, ASML known to work with a customer to deploy EUV end of 2016 to mid-node 10nm-chip production. ASML said to expect the mid-2015 six NXE: 3350B machines deliver rang.
