Astronomers have found a real space laboratory gravity

A team of astronomers from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, using a radio telescope “Green Bank” was able to observe the triple star system located relatively close to our solar system, has announced that this area would be no exaggeration to call “natural gravity laboratory.”

This extremely interesting area is located approximately 4,200 light years from Earth. The system consists of two stars of class “white dwarf”, as well as an incredibly dense neutron star. orbit rotation of these objects are so close to each other that the total area of their location in the space even smaller than the distance from Earth to the Sun.

The reason that astronomers are very pleased with their discovery is that this triple system and all the stars within it interact in the ways in which science has not ever watch. The study of these gravitational interactions may give scientists new insights into how these stars can behave in the universe.

In addition, scientists believe that the observations of the system allow us to understand the true nature of gravity – the question of fundamental physics, which is still not fully understood by science. Just imagine what a millisecond pulsar (a type of neutron star) is available in this triple system of stars, wrapped around its axis 366 times per second.

“This triple system is a natural space laboratory. Observation of the processes occurring in it will help to understand how these systems work, as well as answer some questions related to the work of the general theory of relativity in such extreme conditions, “- said Scott Ransom of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and head of the study.

Millisecond pulsars, like this one, perfectly suited for scientific observations, as rotate at a constant speed. Obtained by observing their data can be used in a variety of research and, quite possibly, even illusory search for gravitational waves – distortions in space-time described by the theory of gravity, but has not yet been found.

“Gravitational perturbations caused by objects of this triple system, have a very strong and clear influence. Millisecond pulsar in this case can serve as a powerful tool for scientists to measure these perturbations “- quoted Ransom research portal EurekAlert.

The resulting telescope “Green Bank” data were supplemented with information gathered the Arecibo Observatory radio telescope, telescope Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, the Sloan Digital heavenly project review, satellite NASA GALEX, and Space Telescope “Spitzer” and ground WYIN, located in the U.S. state of Arizona.

“This is an incredibly interesting system. She probably just has a crazy history of its formation, and we have already done a great job to understand it “- sums up the Ransom.

Details of the study were published in the scientific journal Nature on January 5.
