Find a Question:
Asus Zenbook Infinity: better, but not infinitely
Introduction: old wine?
Since May 2013 we already knew that he was coming, but it took four months before the Asus Zenbook Infinity finally pulled away behind the glass and showed. To the general public When that time came, replaced the name Asus Infinity by a model number, so the ultrabook now goes through life as Asus Zenbook UX301.
If a new Zenbook shown multiple times, but always behind glass is installed, then run the course expectations high. Therefore we compare the new with the old Zenbook UX301 Zenbook Prime and we look at the improvements that Asus has made. The new Zenbook In addition, we keep the question in mind or Asus really has put down a new laptop or that the company sells old wine in new bottles. Outward pomp
The first thing you notice about the new Zenbook is the altered appearance, which now has the new color ‘Sapphire Blue’ or ‘Moonstone White’. In addition, the material has changed. The Zenbook Prime was still largely made of aluminum, but the UX301 Asus has a combination of glass and plastic chosen, which is also the exterior of Gorilla Glass made.

That glass on the outside of the Zenbook is initially a strange case. Gorilla Glass is in fact typically used to make scratch screens for smartphones and tablets, but Asus has just put the glass back on the cover of the laptop. This cover is made of the characteristic in a circular brushed aluminum. In the middle light the Asus logo on the laptop and that gives us what is a luxury. Additional advantage of Gorilla Glass is that it also keeps even scratches the surface of the Zenbook yet.
On the other side of the cover we find the actual display screen to, that has a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. Asus is on cheaper models of the new Zenbook also supply a 1920×1080 screen, but wanted Asus obviously quite unpacking in Berlin, so we were treated to the high resolution screen. This new screen has advantages and disadvantages. Advantage is of course that the high resolution produces a sharper image. To make the comparison, we put a Zenbook Prime next to the UX301 and we concluded that there is indeed everything looks slightly sharper on the new screen. It should be noted that the only difference is clearly visible when you sit close to the screen. At half a meter away is no longer visible.
Asus Zenbook UX301
The new screen also has disadvantages. Because Intel touchscreens has made obligatory on ultrabooks have the Zenbook UX301 has a smooth and glossy glass. The service is fine, but the glass unfortunately leads to annoying reflections on the screen. The old Zenbook was still comes with a matte screen and it shows another advantage over having. The UX301 When we put the two side by side Zenbooks, showed that the vertical viewing angles of the Zenbook Prime a lot better than the new UX301. Despite the use of an IPS panel in the UX301 arose at sharp angles discoloration faster than we would have liked.
Keyboard and touchpad
As mentioned, the UX301 comes in blue and white. The blue version we liked the best and the UX301 also comes initially only available in this color. The blue variant, the palmrests and the plastic around the keyboard made of matt, dark gray plastic, which gives little distraction while working on the laptop. The white variant that palmrests made of white, shiny plastic, leaving behind what a cheap impression. Moreover, the white plastic mirrors properly, which will be if you sit near a window or right under a lamp. Zenbook uncomfortable with this work
On the keyboard of the new Zenbook seems to have. Asus not doctored The flat keys are still the same and the touch feels the same as the Zenbook Prime, which we could with the keyboard from the feet fine.
Asus has touch pad changed slightly. The size and the surface are unchanged, but the mouse buttons are improved. The Zenbook Prime had in fact fairly deep to press buttons, which give some feedback unclear. The mouse buttons on the UX301 have less travel and have clear clicks. Inner beauty
Not only the outside of the Zenbook UX301 looks good, even inside has Asus handsome hardware provided. The Asus Zenbooks who had put out for us have a fast Core i7-4558U processor, equipped with Intel’s Iris 5100 GPU. That is not a conventional ultrabook processor with a TDP of about 15 watts, but a faster copy which burned up to 28 watts.
Especially the Iris 5100 GPU that is integrated into the fast processor to cause the graphics performance has on advancing. Compared to the HD 4000 GPU in Ivy Bridge ultrabooks, the Iris 5100 GPU a lot more execution units, 40 units, compared to 16 for the HD 4000. At that rate increase but consumption also increases. It is an achievement of that Asus still in a ultrabook it such a fast processor has been able to adapt. We have the laptop can not test under heavy load but we hope that the cooling of the Asus Zenbook to the higher consumption has changed. During the hands-on with the UX301 we heard the air at least still produce huge noise.
However, this fast hardware costs a lot. Exact prices are not yet known, but the UX301 with Core i7-4500U, 8GB memory and a 256GB-SSD is already in some webshops for 2200 euros in the price. The variant with Iris GPU will still be several hundred dollars more expensive. Because such expensive laptops not play, everyone Asus also has a cheaper version of the UX301, UX302 namely built. The UX302 we have not seen in real life, but the specifications are already known. The UX302 will receive up to a full HD screen and will be what logger and heavier than the UX301. This laptop does get back the option to be used with a graphics card in the form of Nvidia’s GeForce GT 730M. Equipped

Both on the outside as on the inside appears to have to put down. Eventually a better version of the Asus Zenbook thoroughly doctored So it is new wine in new bottles. Unfortunately, not all improvements equally successful. To the new look of the UX301 we keep namely a mixed feeling. The striking glass on the outside is certainly handsome constructed and thus let the UX301 is confused by anyone with a cheaper laptop. Unfortunately, that outward pomp at the white version which passed; thereby delivers the glossy plastic around the keyboard once again a cheap feeling.
Also, the new screen is shiny and has good viewing angles less than the screen of the previous Zenbook. Although the picture is sharper, but the viewing angles and reflections certainly disappointing. If we had to say we would put the lower resolution for granted and the old screen Zenbook Prime in the blue UX301, to create. Ideal Zenbook
With the rest of the Zenbook is absolutely nothing wrong. Under the hood of the UX301 Asus has a significant progress. With the i7 processor with Iris gpu you can count on the performance of a regular laptop with graphics card, in the format of an ultrabook. The keyboard is pleasant preserved and the new touchpad of the UX301 click a little better than the last.
From November, everyone in the Netherlands with a big bomb readies the blue UX301 themselves purchase. The white variant and the UX302 follow an unknown time. For us, like the new wine in any case, the pocket where the occupants however still has a few misses.Viewing:-392
