A security researcher has found a way to let Whatsapp crash by bombarding a victim with smileys. To crash as the software appears if more than 4000 smileys are sent in a message.

The bug was discovered by Indrajeet Bhuyan, who describes himself as an independent security researcher. Whatsapp to join both the web version and the mobile version problems as an attacker bombards victims with smileys. The chat service crashes if a call is opened which sent a malicious over 4000 smileys in one message, according to a demonstration of the bug.

Because of the problems a chat can not be opened and must be removed. Besides the problems mainly occur on the Android operating system. Several smartphones, including the relatively new OnePlus Two, struggled with crashing conversations. On iOS ensure messages with thousands of smileys for a short lockup, but the software does not crash, says the researcher.

The bug appears to be a problem that was previously established, whereby the sending of large messages caused a crash. Whatsapp repaired this by setting a character limit, but it turns out that this is not strict enough for smileys adjusted. It is likely that, by coming out of the problems, there is still a stricter limit on the number of smilies per message set.
