Australia claims that state hackers break into parties and parliament

According to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the country’s parliament has been the target of ‘advanced attacks’. Political parties in the country would also have been attacked by state hackers.

The attack on the political parties came to light in the investigation into that of the parliament, according to the prime minister. “Our cyber experts believe that an advanced state unit is responsible for the malicious activity,” says Morrison. The attack took place a few weeks ago, a few months before the elections; they will be held in May. There would be no evidence that data has been diverted.

The Prime Minister has ordered the Australian Cyber Security Center to assist political parties and the Australian electoral council with technical assistance. In addition, the government has ‘put in place several measures to keep the integrity of the voting system intact’. The attack on the networks of the parties took place at both Liberal and Labor and the Nationals.

It is not known which state is behind the attacks, but according to the Sydney Morning Herald , the characteristics of the operation point to China. The goal is also not clear, but it is feared for attempts to influence the elections.
