Automotive antifreeze will make solar power more affordable

The use of relatively inexpensive materials and coolant, which protects the automobile radiator from freezing in cold weather, may be the key to the creation of more affordable solar cells without toxic substances. Further development of the technology may allow to create solar cells in a microwave oven, the magazine writes Sciencedaily.

Engineers Oregon State University (OSU) have found that ethylene glycol, widely used antifreeze, solvent can be a cost that is ideal for the production of thin-film solar cells, which are easily scaled up to mass production on an industrial scale. The study was published in the scientific journal Material Letters.

It is reported that the technology works with a component CZTS (copper zinc tin sulfide), which caused a great deal of interest because of different optical properties, low cost, and environmental safety.

“The use in the manufacture of solar cells are too expensive or toxic materials may contain global use of solar energy. We need a technology using low-cost, abundant materials available, especially in the United States. We developed the technology offers all of this, “- said Greg Herman, an associate professor in the School of Chemistry, Biology and Environment of the State University of Oregon.

By comparison, today most solar cells are made of chemical elements such as copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS). India – a rare and expensive metal, produced mainly in China. In the past year the price of indium and gallium in 275 times higher than the price of zinc.

Commercially important everything cost of materials, reaction speed, quality control. After all, it’s money. Our technology allows us to produce high-quality solar cells, but at a lower price.

The researchers acknowledge that today CZTS solar cells yield CIGS-performance elements. Further studies will increase the performance of CZTS, making them more competitive in the market.
