Beta iOS 12 enables live monitoring with iPhone microphone via AirPods

Apple gives its wireless AirPod earphones a function to listen to live with the sound that the microphones of the connected iPhone receive. For example, people with hearing problems can use AirPods to understand a conversation partner in a busy restaurant, for example.

The Live Listen feature is in the beta of iOS 12, writes Techcrunch . It can be activated by linking AirPods and adding the Hearing item to the Control Panel. Then it is possible to switch on Live Listening by pressing the button in the Control Panel.

The Live Listening feature has been in iOS for years for hearing aids with a Made For iPhone quality mark. They have separate settings in the Accessibility menu where users can turn on Live Listening. With the function users can place the phone a bit further and follow a conversation partner or, for example, a lecture, where otherwise it would not have been possible.

Apple has confirmed the feature, but does not say why it is now in AirPods. AirPods do not count as hearing aids, giving the impression that users can use the function above all to eavesdrop on others by placing the phone in the vicinity.

That can work, because although Live Listening on an unlocked iPhone shows a striking red bar at the top of the screen, that is not the case on the lockscreen. Therefore, at least in this first beta of iOS 12, you can not see that the function is on. Live Listening works fine and with relatively little delay, according to a short test by Tweakers.

Apple did not announce the feature during the keynote on iOS 12 at its developers’ conference WWDC and did not mention it on the website of the new version of the operating system. Tweakers published a preview of iOS 12 on Tuesday.
