Bicycle VanMoof Amsterdam introduces a bicycle with GSM and Bluetooth, and an integrated electronic lock. The bike with the name Smart Bike is approaching with Android or iOS devices that can be read different parts.

An important part of the Smart Bike is that the “company takes responsibility” for a stolen bicycle. If a bike is stolen, a user can specify as stolen through an app. Then VanMoof says through his ‘Peace of mind’ program to retrieve the bike within two weeks. If not, then you get a new disposable.

In the frame of the bicycle is a touchpad display which can be read off, among other things the speed. The electronic lock allows click a slot in the frame. The lock can then be opened in three ways, namely, that the user is near the bike, Bluetooth is turned on paired phone and the user touches the bike in a certain place so that the bluetooth le-functionality, the owner of the bicycle recognize. Also, the lock via an app can be accessed on the phone or via a key fob remote.

Project manager Jean-Paul Niellissen tells Tweakers the bicycle beside Bluetooth to connect to the mobile phone and does not include GPS. “There’s a mobile chip listening once every half hour to the Vodafone network. Because the chip checks once every half hour if there is a message, which does not need much energy,” said Nielissen. “About sending an SMS we have worldwide agreements with Vodafone. We can send specific commands via SMS after the user specifies the bicycle as stolen, for example tracking on.” The bicycle then deactivates certain functions and three-point measurements, send it to the manufacturer for the determination of the location. “That system is uBlox having a specific algorithm that they can measure between buildings and is accurate,” says Niellissen.

One of the projects that parallel the development of the second electric bicycle, the Electrified S, says technical manager Thomas Ettema. “The big question was whether the functionalities that could also put in a normal bike without significant battery in the electric bicycle with large batteries. The power consumption is low enough that you as a user have to have anything to do with the technology. The bike simply work. ”

Using the hub dynamo, users can see how hard they cycle and maintain its routes, but there are no online tracking. “It is deliberately,” said Ettema. “If we could see that always, you get privacy issues but maybe ever in the app and you choose for it themselves.”

Some of the software is developed in partnership with Google Zoo, but that software is not done according to Ettema. The hope is upcoming spring with Google to provide a cycle analysis, which can make after analyzing your cycling behavior ensure that the user is getting dry in commuting.

the bicycle itself can be updated via the app and the Bluetooth connection. In that case, the firmware on the phone on the bike. The VanMoof bike called Smart Bike, weighs 14 kilograms and is from May 31 to buy worldwide, though only delivery takes place from October. Initially, the version with three gears will cost 1098 euro and the version with eight gears 1298 euros. The official sales start in December. Must be deposited there in 1798 euros per bike.
