BlackBerry: hardware development is outsourced to loss, focus on software and services

Blackberry has to announce quarterly figures. The second quarter for fiscal 2017 is over and it also means the end for BlackBerry as a hardware manufacturer. If you look at the numbers, no surprise in the while software and services were up well, this was not so in the hardware. This does not mean that there will soon be no more hardware with BlackBerry logo. In Indonesia it has finished with the joint venture BB Merah Putih a licensing deal that will enable the development and distribution of BlackBerry hardware through this joint venture.

At the same time this means that BlackBerry will continue to rely more on software, both for business and for private clients. To accelerate the development of cross-platform Apps, a strategic partnership with Emtek was received. So new apps, services and content to be disseminated worldwide, based on the BBM platform.

In the area of business customers BlackBerry gained around 3000 to the first quarter, 81 percent of business customers in the second quarter were there recurring customers. The Software & Services even reported a profit of € 29 million, the division Mobility Solutions, which includes hardware, the quarter ended however with a loss in the amount of 8 million dollars.

All numbers of BlackBerry can be found on this page , out of these, it is clear that BlackBerry actually only has a chance of survival if just the hardware is outsourced. However, the income through software and services – despite strong increase compared to the previous quarter – not at a level at which one can speak of a bright future prospect.
