Find a Question:
Powered by the world’s thinnest glass thickness of only two atoms
That is called, but we did not know. It appears at the beginning of 2012, scientists from Cornell University, USA and the German University of Ulm have created the thinnest in the world of glass. And maybe we would have about this case is not found, if the event has not been reflected in the new edition of Guinness World Records 2014 edition.
Portal Science Daily reports that in the article of the scientific journal Nano Letters for January 2012 describes the incredibly thin glass, the thickness of which is equal to one or two atoms of the molecule! Interestingly, the scientists created it, did it by accident.
Scientific mozgolomy just “prepared” graphene on copper foil in a quartz furnace and accidentally found that the stuff that they wanted to create, there was some strange plaque. Upon closer examination it was found that this coating consists of silicon and oxygen components that are normally present in the ordinary glass. At the same graphene layer formed on the glass turned out so thin that when using an electron microscope, scientists were able to see all the atoms of silicon and oxygen that it contains.
A series of experiments , the result of which was entirely accidental creation of the finest glass in the world, was led by researcher David Muller of Cornell University.
Through the creation of the world’s thinnest glass scientists have for the first time in the history of the opportunity to explore it much more accurate structure.
“The result of this work, if you look at my career, I will be most proud of,” – says happily David Muller, professor of applied physics.
“This is the first time that scientists have been able to make out the glass structure at the atomic level,” – he added.
Scientists involved in this research say that it is quite possible it is incredibly thin glass someday be used to increase the power of processors used in the manufacture of computers and smartphones.
