Broadband services in Europe: there is less than expected

The European Commission has published a press release relating to broadband services in Europe last Thursday. The content is not really surprising, but it does not hurt to get certain things from time to time before the eyes. So it is, do not get the European consumers of broadband services, the speeds they are paying for.


On average they have only 74 percent of the posted speed for which they have paid. This number is derived from a study of the European Commission from over fixed broadband connections. We in Germany do not even cut off particularly badly.

Important results of this study should provide that the case?

* Cable provides the most reliable download speeds: a European average of 74 percent to conceal significant differences in the performance of the individual technologies. xDSL-based services reached only 63.3% of the promised download speed, compared with 91.4% for cable and 84.4% for FTTx connections.

* In absolute terms, the average download speed of all countries and of all technologies amounted to 19.47 Mbit / s at peak times. FTTx services reach to 41.02 Mbit / s, the highest speeds. For cable services, the speed was 33.10 Mb / s, while xDSL services with an average of 7.2 Mbit / s lagged significantly behind.

Incidentally, the European Commission is looking for volunteers.

This study will run until the end of 2014, ie two annual measurements are planned. European consumers can measure the performance of their respective ISP if they join a volunteer community in which all 27 EU countries plus Croatia, Iceland and Norway are represented. Selected consumers receive a small device that they connect with their private internet. About this unit a series of automated tests is performed when the connection is not used. Background information:

The speeds of broadband products are “up to XX Mbit / s” specified in the advertising. It is the “advertised”, “nominal” or “promised” speed. However, the differences between the indicated speed and the speed of the consumer can be considerable.

According to the study results explain between 27% and 41% of European Internet customers that their download speeds do not match the speeds specified in their contracts. Almost half of the customers in the EU refers to occasional difficulties in access to online content and applications due to insufficient speed or capacity.
