Cabinet from imec for real-time analysis of cyclists can enter the market

Belgian research institute imec has carried out a final test with a box that is equipped with bluetooth and ANT + to accurately track the data of cyclists. According to the researchers, the hardware can be used in a year.

The test within the Conamo project , which stands for continuous athlete monitoring, was performed during a training session of the juniors and the U23 team cyclo-cross. In the past two years a box has been developed to send data from sensors in real time. This allows the heart rate, speed and position of cyclists to be determined live.

Such data is already included, but according to the researchers it can not yet be continuously read and forwarded. A lot of data is only available offline afterwards. The hardware of the Conamo project, for example, must make the data transparent to TV channels, so that presenters can gain insight into the course, or that data can be shown in the picture. The data must also benefit coaching cyclists from the team car.

The box that imec and the various partners have made in the project is a radio that works with bluetooth and ANT + . The latter is an economical technique that also works on 2.4GHz and is intended for communication between different sensors at a short distance. Among others, the Belgian broadcaster VRT is connected to the project, which has been implemented with a budget of 1.6 million euros.

According to the researchers, the energy consumption of the equipment is very low and data can be exchanged over a distance of up to 700 meters between two bicycles. That distance can be longer if more bicycles are available. The box would work quickly and with very little delay, so that, for example, escapes of cyclists in real time can be followed well. With 4g, for example, tracking such data in the mountains is not possible, says Bart Braem, senior researcher at imec.

The imec solution also consists of algorithms to analyze the sensor data. Facing Tweakers, Braem says that the final test showed the feasibility and potential of the system. “We were able to see very well in which heart rate zone the rider was, in this case on a large screen and on a tablet app, in order to have the performance analyzed by a trainer.In addition, we were able to monitor who was where, what kind of media reporting also added value. ”

After the demonstration of the project, the further steps for a commercialization are now being examined. For example, it is being considered whether a spin-off will occur or whether a joint venture will be set up. Braem expects, based on the interest shown, that the product can be on the market within a year.
