At a recent presentation by Google, where the public was shown an updated line of smartphones Pixel, company representatives said that a special bid was made on the cameras of the devices. According to top management, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL single lenses can even compete with dual-camera flagships. Let’s find out how these statements are true by comparing the iPhone XS Max with the Google Pixel 3 XL.

Before starting the comparison, we’ll give you some technical information: The iPhone XS Max smartphone is equipped with a dual camera module and includes a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. The resolution in both cases is 12 megapixels.
In the case of the Google Pixel 3 XL, things are a little simpler. The smartphone has a single module with a wide-angle lens with a resolution of 12 megapixels. It would seem that on paper, the flagship of Google is losing the iPhone – but how will things be with direct comparison?

Portrait mode

One of the advantages of Apple’s flagship device is portrait mode. The iPhone XS Max has debuted a feature that allows you to change the depth of blur in real time. Thanks to the double module and special algorithms, the bokeh effect is really good. As for Google Pixel 3 XL, here the blurring of the snapshot takes place exclusively by program methods, which could not but affect the final result.

HDR mode

With the release of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, Apple introduced the Smart HDR feature. This option allows you to automatically arrange multiple images to obtain the best quality. Remarkably, the flagship from Google got a similar mode.
In general, both smartphones coped well with this task, but the Apple device showed a more detailed picture.

Shooting in low light conditions

In this test, both devices also showed good results. However, the amount of noise was slightly higher in the Google Pixel 3 XL image.

Front-camera

One of the strengths of the Google Pixel 3 XL is the dual camera system on the front of the device. This gives a distinct advantage over the iPhone XS Max, allowing you to capture much more detail. The resolution of the lens is 8 megapixels.

Summing up, we can say that the iPhone XS Max and Google Pixel 3 XL cameras have their own strengths and weaknesses. Determining the winner turned out to be quite difficult, since everything depends on the tasks set. For example, the color rendition of pictures of the iPhone XS Max turned out to be the closest to the real, while the Google smartphone sometimes went in warm or cool shades. At the same time, the portrait mode worked adequately on both devices. When it came to comparing the front cameras, the Google Pixel 3 XL was a little better than its competitor.
