CES | Huawei unveiled a budget gaming console on Android

Over the past few years, the Chinese company Huawei Technologies has expanded its telecommunications business, having been engaged in the production of tablet computers, smart phones and set-top boxes. It is time to release its own gaming console.

Huawei has said it plans to start selling video game console called TRON. Release will take place in China in the second quarter of this year. The system was presented at the exhibition of consumer electronics CES-2014 in Las Vegas. Link console is designed for gaming and video on the TV, the newspaper The Wall Street Journal.

Huawei is trying to establish itself as a consumer brand as looking for new opportunities to increase profits outside the market of telecommunications and networking equipment. Over the past years, the company has become one of the largest suppliers of smartphones in China, but it has yet to earn the recognition of consumers. New game console could accelerate this process.

Device in the form of a cylinder is running a special version of the operating system Android and connects to the controller via a wireless Bluetooth. Presented at the exhibition model uses the Nvidia Tegra 4, which, according to Huawei, can later be replaced by a processor Tegra K1, announced last week as part of the same event.

Last week, the Chinese government officially lifted the ban on the sale of video game consoles, which operated for 13 years. Huawei claims that the decision to launch TRON nothing to do with the government’s actions.

According to research firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers, China, with its huge population is the third largest market in the world of computer games, despite the limited presence in the country of such brands like Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.

TRON prospects in the Chinese market will depend on the pricing policy and the proposed games. Huawei has not yet announced the official price of the game console, but at the CES-2014 stated that in China it will cost less than $ 200. Prices will also depend on the amount of internal storage. Producer said that already works with the biggest game developers in Europe, USA, Japan and South Korea, but declined to name specific companies.

Besides games, TRON will able to watch video on ultra-definition TVs with support for 4K . About console sales outside the Chinese market, the company has not yet decided.
