Find a Question:
Cheap biofuels will soon become a reality
Microalgae are used in a salty sea and in fresh water around the world. The European team of scientists is going to prove the suitability of these organisms for the production of bioethanol for use as a biofuel value of less than 0.4 euro per liter.
The project DEMA , funded by the European Union focused on cyanobacteria – blue-green algae spread out on the water and on land. Microalgae are found in oceans, lakes, grow on moist soil and rocks. They get their energy through photosynthesis.
Researchers reveal the potential of producing ethanol using metabolic engineering, which involves changing the chemical reactions within the cells to efficiently produce bioethanol. On technology, secreted by algae bio-ethanol is purified by passage through a membrane.
The researchers claim that they have developed technology is superior to any other technology that is described in the scientific literature.
Biofuels has huge potential. Its use will significantly reduce carbon emissions, which will have a positive impact on the global climate. In terms of biofuel microalgae have many advantages over other types of biomass: they are formed naturally evolve and pose no risk to food crops.
The project brought together nine participants from academic and industrial institutions in the six countries of the European Union. It is coordinated by the University of Limerick in Ireland. To finance the project under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) The European Union has allocated € 5 million. DEMA was launched in December last year and will be completed in May 2017.
Gradually, renewable energy sources are becoming more popular than gas .
