children must have tried programming before their 12th

Belgian minister:
The Belgian Minister for Digital Agenda Alexander De Croo believes that children must be brought into contact with programming before they reach the age of twelve. He did not make concrete proposals to make this possible.

The minister expressed his opinion during a technology conference on diversity in Antwerp last weekend. According to him, children should in any case be brought into contact with programming for their twelfth year.

“Initiatives next to the school are great, but it is important to do this in the classroom so that everyone participates, otherwise we will strengthen the gap,” said De Croo, according to HLN . He also called it important to develop skills ‘that distinguish us from machines’. According to him, that is certainly the case ‘in times when certain jobs will be taken over by artificial intelligence’.

De Croo took part in a debate during the conference with Thierry Geerts, director of Google Belgium, Saskia Van Uffelen, CEO of Ericsson and Jürgen Ingels, founder of B-Hive. The conference was organized by PEP, which stands for Positive Education Psychology. This organization helps young people to continue in education.
