China will build large ocean thermal power plant


Lockheed Martin announced the collaboration with Reignwood Group in the construction of oceanic systems for the generation of clean energy (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, OTEC) in China. New floating power generator with the designed capacity of 100 megawatts can operate 365 days a year.

For the production of electricity OTEC-station uses the natural temperature difference between the cold water from deep ocean areas and the warm surface waters. The principle is as follows: passing through the heat exchanger, the warm sea water turns into vapor liquid with a low boiling point, such as ammonia. The steam drives the electricity generating turbine. Cold water in turn, translates into a liquid and vapor cycle repeats.

Because of the large difference in temperature at different depths in tropical regions best suited for the work stations OTEC. Unlike wind and solar power, thermal power plant could generate electricity around the clock, covering the basic part of load 365 days a year. In the process of OTEC plants produced as a byproduct of cold water, which can be used in the surrounding air conditioning and refrigeration.


Despite all the benefits and limitations (the first demonstration ocean thermal power plants were built in the 1980s), the technology of OTEC has not been commercialized because of the scale of relatively high costs associated with the installation and maintenance of the system.

The power plant on the coast of southern China will fully cover the needs of the nearby holiday destinations in power. Construction of OTEC system will begin next year, after careful consideration of the concept. Lockheed Martin and Reignwood already set to work. In the future, the company plans to use the knowledge and experience in the construction of new facilities.


According to Lockheed Martin and Reignwood, their company can annually produce as much electricity as burning 1.3 million barrels of oil, which will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by half a million tonnes. With the price of oil near $ 100 a barrel, fuel economy from one ocean thermal plant could exceed $ 130 million a year.
