Company behind Dutch foundation that wants to send people to Mars is bankrupt

The company Mars One Ventures AG has been declared bankrupt. That company was the financial force behind the Dutch foundation Mars One, which aims to send volunteers on a trip to Mars.

The bankruptcy appears from a notice on reddit , which refers to a judgment of the court of Basel. On January 15, Mars One Ventures AG would be declared bankrupt. That company was linked to the Dutch Mars One foundation and had to provide financing for a trip to Mars with people who volunteered for it.

Now that the commercial company behind the foundation is bankrupt, the project seems to have no chance of success. However, the Mars One Foundation itself did not reveal anything about the bankruptcy and after the court’s decision the foundation also posted several messages on Twitter , as if nothing of the plans had changed.

Mars One was founded in 2012, with the aim to establish a human colony on Mars in 2025. Until 2014 volunteers could register to come along. The first two weeks yielded 78,000 interested people, wrote in 2013 .

The foundation never proposed a concrete plan to reach the red planet and many people questioned the feasibility. In 2014, students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducted a study. They concluded that the Mars One plan was not feasible .

Update 15:22: Bas Lansdorp, the Dutchman who founded the Mars One Foundation, says to Engadget that the foundation still exists, but can do nothing without further investments. Lansdorp says that it is discussing a solution with other parties.
