Company Mozilla working on improving the JPEG
Over time, the size of web pages are gradually increased, mainly due to the larger number of images on the site. In most cases, the image encoding format used jpeg, which was developed 22 years ago. Since then, the format has become very common and almost not changed.
However , Mozilla analyzed data compression method and found it ideal. In this regard, it has announced a project to develop a new format graphics mozjpeg, intended to reduce the final size of the image.
The new format is a kind of libjpeg-turbo with an additional integrated functionality perl script jpgcrush. The final decision will increase the efficiency of data compression in graphical elements of web pages.
During the first test was processed in 1500 random files from Wikimedia, and the test results showed that the script reduces the file size by an average of 10%. This , Mozilla said in its official blog.
Also worth noting is that the new method can also be used to encode the png-files, but the gain is only 2-6%.
