Conquest ice surface of Jupiter will be engaged in a tiny submarine

Covered with ice Europe – natural satellite of Jupiter – interested scientists for many years. Space agency NASA would gladly have “plunged and swam” under a thick layer of frozen H2O, but so far it is not clear how to do that is not too expensive and safely. And then you might come to the aid of a tiny submarine, the development of which is currently carried out in the laboratory NASA Jet Propulsion (JPL) and scientists from the University of Uppsala in Sweden.

When these tiny underwater space boats are ready, they will be the size of no more than two cans of regular soda. This size of the research unit will not only save considerably when you start it in space (as it is known, each sent into space agencies kilogram costing tens of thousands of dollars), but also has a much easier task to break under the ice shield in Europe.

Ideally, the goal of the program is to send to Europe vehicle equipped with high-tech equipment and drill, which will collect information about the underwater environment. Being underwater, underwater device will connect to the base station cable to be used for transmission of information received by boat and signals for controlling the motors eight small submarine.

The first prototypes of such boats Swedish team has already collected. And she gathered them, thanks to technology 3D-printing. Themselves until the plastic prototypes, but the final version of the tiny space submarines will use titanium case, which will protect the fragile sensors and instrumentation for research.

Specific dates for the launch of our mini-submarines to Europe has not been announced. But NASA and the European Space Agency is actively moving toward the goal. Now the main task of scientists is to find an answer to the question “how much ice will have to drill.” If all goes according to plan, the mission of drilling ice crust of Europe will have to take place sometime in 2030.

Meanwhile, other researchers from NASA, too, is what to do: “Cassini” found possible traces of water on another moon of Saturn.
