An international team of scientists, funded by DARPA, has created the world’s first telescopic contact lens which can make eyes three times sharper. The present invention may be called the world’s first bionic eye that can give vision like Superman – comic book hero, published by DC Comics.


The photo above shows that the telescopic contact lenses operate in two different modes. When light passes through the central portion of the lens has normal vision, and passing through the outer edges, which work like a telescope – provides almost three times zoom. Analogues with a thickness of 4.4 mm were too thick for use in everyday life, and telescopic spectacles looked very bulky and uncomfortable. These telescopic lens can be implanted directly into the eye. However, it should be noted that at this stage of the project the image quality obtained with the lens is not ideal.


To create such a thin lens, a group of scientists led by Joseph Ford of the University of California at San Diego and Eric Tremblay of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne had to work hard. The light that falls on the edge of the lens, thanks to a special mirror is reflected four times, and then projected onto the retina at the back of the eyeball. Mirror image not only increase 2.8 times, but also clean the chromatic aberration. To switch between normal vision and vision with an increase in the lenses used a polarizing filter.

These lenses can be a helping hand for people who suffer from age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD affects the central area of ​​the retina responsible for central vision.
