Created the world’s smallest 3D-puzzle




Experts Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) have established the size of a grain of sand puzzles. The purpose of a scientific experiment was to demonstrate a new way of reducing the size of molds for injection molding, and not get nervous fans of puzzles. Injection molding is used for the creation of different products, the components of jet engines and ending LEGO building blocks .

In a conventional injection molding the molten metal or plastic is injected under high pressure into the mold. After cooling, the material is removed from the mold. Problems arise in the production of many small parts. Information easier removed from the mold when joined a plastic layer or metal. Separation of components creates additional expense.

German engineers have found a solution to this problem. They removed parts from the mold by means of metal plates. This method allowed to cast physical objects as small as half a millimeter. The forms themselves are cast by X-ray lithography, which is used for the manufacture of electronic circuits.

The new technology may find application in the production of parts for clockworks. Today, many watch parts are cut out of metal and plastic. Injection molding produces higher quality products and lower production costs. Electronic components are constantly decreasing in size, and to find the correct housing for these tiny devices is sometimes very difficult. However, with the introduction of a new method of injection molding, this problem will be solved.
