Crypto-chat app Signal replaces Text Secure and RedPhone on Android

Signal is offered as an update to the existing Android chat app Text Secure and replaces the bell app RedPhone. These apps fulfilled along the same function as Signal, that was only for IOS available so far.

This reports the maker Open Systems Whisper on his blog. The company has decided to perform the update in order to facilitate the use of the app. Android users could use Secure Text hitherto to chat encrypted and RedPhone to call encrypted. Signal combines these features in an app, allowing users to more easily be able to use secure communications. The app is in use no different than a regular ring or chat app.

Open Whisper Systems was founded by Moxie Marlinspike, a familiar figure in the world of cryptography. In 2014 he collaborated with WhatsApp to end-to-end encryption implementation. WhatsApp, however, is still closed source, while the source code of Signal is available on GitHub. This makes it possible for anyone with sufficient knowledge to control the source code and to contribute to it. The open source development of crypto-chat apps contributes to the safety and reliability. Whistleblower Edward Snowden leaves via Twitter that he used Signal daily.

Signal used end-to-end encryption, which means that information is encrypted by the sender and can only be read by the recipient. It allows for messages using the Text Secure protocol with deniability and forward secrecy. This means among other things that can not be proven that there is an unencrypted message, and that a compromised key does not lead to earlier reports are also read. There is no use of third party services. The fact that used Signal end-to-end encryption, does not mean that the communication is secure one hundred percent. It is only as secure as the device used for the communications.
