Cuba wants to increase Internet access through WiFi and cheaper

The Cuban government has announced that more Wi-Fi hotspots in the state-controlled Internet cafes going places. The prices paid halved Cubans, although it remains priceless Internet for most citizens.

Cuba The Juventud newspaper published the government’s decision this week. It announces the communist government that from next month in 35 government, guiding Internet cafes throughout Cuba wifi internet access is available. The prices are reduced significantly: Instead of $ 4.50 per hour, converted approximately 4 euro, the hourly rate drops to $ 2.50, reports Associated Press.

Despite the fact that such rates for most Cubans are still priceless – an average Cuban earns about 15 to 20 euros per month, but gets a lot of services and products free or nearly free – ask Cuba connoisseurs to mention the significant step is. Until now, wifi only available to tourists in hotels and for ordinary Cubans illegally. Companies also have very limited access to the Internet as well as the government applies censorship. The population, however, has developed over the years an “offline internet” by trading among other media files via portable hard drives, such as The Guardian last year described .

So far, the Cuban government especially with the angry finger pointed toward the American boycott of the lagging behind of Internet connectivity in the country, but Communist leaders are also worried that the Internet can undermine their position. The detente occurred between Cuba and the US earlier this year the government promised however to improve its access to the Internet. The decision to significantly increase the number of Wi-Fi hotspots and reduce tariffs can therefore be seen as an important first step.
