Cyborg Cockroaches to find survivors in collapsed buildings

Researchers at a US university have ‘cyborg cockroaches’ made to find survivors in collapsed buildings. Cockroaches have equipment on their backs in order to make the sounds survivors pick up and to control the movements of the animals.

Then the equipment leads the cockroach to the victims, so that should be easier to find for rescue workers, say researchers at North Carolina State University. The equipment on the back is made in each case of three microphones, which can determine the direction in which a survivor is located. Software must determine the difference between ambient sounds and human sounds.

Cockroaches are suitable for mapping of disaster areas and collapsed buildings, because they can get almost anywhere thanks to their construction. The equipment runs on solar energy; a sensor should cockroaches lead to light, so they continue to work.

The scientists see applications especially in emergencies. When the equipment for cyborg cockroaches should go into production, is unknown. Previously made n the researchers already cyborg cockroaches to bring disaster areas only card, but they could not detect any sounds.
