Find a Question:
Depression accelerates the aging process of human cells
The fact that the depression does little good to know everything without exception. But now scientists have been able to scientifically prove the connection between this emotional state to the fact that its cells begin to grow old in a few times faster than usual. It turns out that depression is harmful not only to the psyche, but also to the human body.
Scientists have long held a parallel between depressive disorders and diseases of people, such as for example diabetes, heart disease and cancer. What is surprising, new research has shown that depression is everything else also speeds up the aging process at the cellular level.
Researchers from the Netherlands to follow the effect of depression on the human body is constantly measured the length of the end portions of chromosomes, called telomeres. At each cycle of cell division in our body, that is, during aging, telomeres get shorter inevitable. This happens because the DNA polymerase, which is responsible for DNA replication, is not able to restore this most DNA from its end. Along the length of the telomere is possible to accurately determine the age of the cell. For example, seniors and telomeres animals shorter telomeres than children or adolescents.
The study involved more than 2,000 people, divided into three groups. The first group were those who had previously been diagnosed with a depressive disorder, but they have coped with this condition. The second group – the people who are currently struggling with depression. The third group – people who have never suffered from depression do not.
Even after having been considered important factors like habits, consumption of food and presence of harmful overweight people with depression showed the shortest length of telomeres. In other words, depression ages the body much faster than cigarettes, alcohol or daily eating unhealthy fatty foods.
If we talk in terms of numbers, the length of telomeres of a person suffering from a depressive disorder, is 5460 kb (kilobases – telomere length units), and the length of telomeres in the average healthy person is 5540 KB. For the year telomeres become shorter on average by 14-20 kb. You can easily calculate that depression can make old people an average of four years or more, if the state will be delayed. And after four years – a rather short period, if you think about it.
Results of the study will help modern medicine better understand depression and its effect on the physical condition of the patients. But, as you well know, the best thing is less frustrated and not to allow depression to themselves within gunshot.
