Desktop power in a laptop: NVIDIA’s GTX 765 m and 780 m

Intels Haswell and NVIDIA’s GeForce 700 series its been a while since released and we have already written quite a lot about both chips. The mobile GeForce chips are in it for the time being remained underexposed. That is why we test two tops of BTO gaming notebook to beat. One is equipped with the mobile GeForce GTX 765 m and the other features top model GTX 780 m. Both laptops are powered by a quadcore Haswell-processor. We look with the help of benchmarks and various games how the GPU’s and among one another and also look at what video cards for desktops to compare the two mobile video cards are. We keep it obviously not only at desktop video cards, but where possible the comparison with other mobile GPUs.

The BTO notebooks are both barebones, which means that the ‘ shell ‘ of the laptop by different laptop builders used, but from different internal hardware. Both barebones are submitted by manufacturer Clevo. The 17CL58 features the Clevo W370ST-chassis, while the 17CL56 is based on the Clevo P170SM-enclosure. A laptop with substantially the same enclosure as the latter we reviewden once before in the form of the Titan IV17 XNB. Also the BTO notebooks of a generation back, when still with Ivy Bridge and GeForce 600 hardware, we have reviewedearlier. Because of the similarities between the cases, we look at this review therefore above all to the performance of the new GPU’s and don’t we expanded on the other features of the laptops.
Laptops: twice the BTO X-book
BTO X-Book 17CL56 with GTX 780 m

BTO has the review copy of the 17CL56 for us of smooth hardware. The barebones can be delivered in many different configurations, with the base model 1429 euro costs and then is equipped with a Core i7, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 4700MQ 770 m video card. Our review copy got an i7-4900MQ and a GeForce GTX 780 m, in combination with a whopping 32 GB working memory. That hardware is driving the price tag though; the tested configuration is sold for just over 2900 euro.

A slightly cheaper price tag has BTO’s 17CL58. This laptop is equipped as standard with a Core i7 4700MQ processor and a GeForce GTX 765 m-video card from Nvidia. Working memory is 8 GB and the laptop has a hard drive 1 terabyte. Total price: 1075 euro. The configuration we tested was equipped with an ssd and twice as much memory, which our test system for 1375 euros over the counter.

Gpu: GK106M and GK104

At the GPUs from Nvidia naming can cause confusion. In the ‘ new ‘ GeForce 700 series show different video cards subcutaneous hefty similarities with the video cards from the previous series. Only the Topper in the new GeForce 700 series is actually features a new gpu. That gpu, the GK110, to consumers only in the GTX 780 and the GTX Titan. Get the GK104-770 and 760 the GTX gpu, beginning earlier in the top models of the GeForce 600 series were to be found.

With the mobile GPUs plays Nvidia also such a game. The GTX GK104-780 m has the same chip as the GTX 770 and GTX 680 for the desktop, but has much lower clock frequencies to control power consumption. In laptops the same gpu NVIDIA’s GTX was previously used in 680MX, albeit with slightly lower clock frequencies.

The GTX comes closest to 765 m at NVIDIA’s GTX 650 Ti on the desktop. The both have the same number of Cuda cores and GPUs feature a 128 bit-memory bus. The desktop card should more energy devoid: therefore the cores and memory clocked higher than at the 765 m.Nvidia GTX 765M

The equivalent of the GTX 780 m is what concerns the architecture on desktop area found in the GTX 770 and the already somewhat outdated GTX 680. The three video cards all feature the commonly used GK104-gpu, that in all these cases about 1536 Cuda cores. The clock frequencies walk pretty apart; a GTX 680 tap on 1006MHz and has a boost frequency of 1058MHz, while the GTX 1046MHz and 1085MHz 770 with boost there still does. The GTX 780 m in our laptop hangs on a maximum clock frequency of significantly low clock frequencies of 797MHz. Who the GTX 780 m ensure that this card the GTX 770 not at will can legs and therefore we take its little brother, the GTX 760, also in the comparison with it.
Benchmarks

To measure the performance of the GPU’s run we benchmarks with different games. We use different testing protocols for video cards for desktops and laptops. Check out to see how the laptop cards is performing relative to your desktop chips we test the both laptops via both protocols.

When testing video cards for desktops we use the same test system, but that is difficult in the case of the laptops. In order to give an indication of the performance we choose relatively light games, where the processor has little influence on the outcome of the tests. We use the same settings as with the benchmarks of resolution and desktop cards. For the benchmarks we use NVIDIA’s 320.49 driver and on the laptops, we install the mobile version of that driver.

Of course, we compare the two mobile GPUs also with their mobile predecessors and competitors that we have tested. For laptops we use generally the same games as at desktop benchmarks, but with lower settings, because that quickly leads to unplayable low framerates.

3Dmark and Unigine Heaven

To an initial indication of the performance of the GPU’s to get we run 3DMark and the Unigine Heaven-test.

In 3DMark shows the GTX 780 m to put down a score which is near the desktop GTX 760. The GTX 765 m still runs about 15 percent behind on the GTX 650 Ti.

Unigine Heaven shows the same picture. The GTX 770 is performing, not surprising, much better than the GTX 780 m, which in turn is close to the GTX 760.

Alien vs Predator and DiRT: Showdown

Alien vs Predator and DiRT: Showdown we turn for some time and can meanwhile be as fairly out of date. Both games are few intensively for the processor and thereby the different CPU’s in the test systems may make little difference. Graphically the game know it too fast video cards still sometimes difficult to make.

To compare the mobile video cards with desktop cards we turn Alien vs Predator at high settings at 1920 x 1080 pixels with 2xAA and 16xAF. The GTX 780 m is about Fourteen percent slower than the GTX 760. The GTX 765 m know on these settings no playable framerates in the AvP.

After the comparison with desktop GPUs, that have been tested with anti-aliasing enabled, we compare the GPUs also with mobile competitors. Since we, however, always mobile GPUs with anti-aliasing turned off testing, we need to disable that functionality. So can the GTX 765 m 780 m and be compared to other mobile GPUs in our database. In comparison with all mobile GPUs we have tested so far is the GTX 780 m ample fastest. It should be noted that the used driver between the laptops differs. Nvidia will, however, recent times little optimizations for a three year old game in the drivers have implemented, whereby the results should give a good indication of the performance of the GeForce 700 chips compared to their predecessors and competitors.

The racing game DiRT: Showdown runs fine on recent computers and also the GTX 765 m plays the game at the highest settings with acceptable framerates.
Battlefield 3 and Stalker

Battlefield 3 and Stalker we have on medium settings turned, so that there can be comparisons drawn between the GeForce 700 chips and other mobile GPUs.

In Battlefield 3 is the average framerate of the 780 m crazy enough lower than that of the older GTX 680 m. However, the minimum framerate is higher again. Also the GTX 765 m plays Battlefield 3 with these settings smoothly.

Stalker is such outdated that we no longer use the game new video cards on the desktop to test. Turning the game on medium settings for laptops, with anti-aliasing turned off. That causes the both Nvidia chips high framerates can put down. Compared to the GeForce 600 series are the framerates a lot higher.
Shogun 2 and sleeping Dogs

Shogun 2 and sleeping Dogs Finally, are two fairly recent games. Shogun 2, we use exclusive to desktop maps to test, so mobile comparison material is not available.

Despite the ultra settings in Shogun know the GTX 780 m a good framerate. In this game is the laptop even faster than the desktop GTX 760. The GTX 765 m on average, these settings can no more than 23 frames per second off presses.
Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs is to benchmark laptops a relatively new game. The benchmarks we run both on desktops and laptops. For laptops don’t we use the highest settings, but we run the game on medium settings.

For desktop video cards we turn sleeping Dogs on ultra settings, and the GTX 765 m bother with it. The GTX 780 m know all the eyecandy flexible display with these settings.

With the settings on medium State anti-aliasing and that saves considerably in the framerates that the laptops drop. The GTX 765 m is thereby significantly faster. The GTX is 780 m for the fastest laptop video card. Although the AMD’s HD 7970M is higher in the list, but has a minimum frame rate of 36 fps, whereas the GTX 780 m quite higher.
Conclusion: mobile gaming?

Video cards in laptops are always slower than their desktop counterpart. That we knew before we started the test already and that shows once again the results of the benchmarks. That’s not surprising, because laptops offer less space for cooling capabilities and energy consumption must of course also intrude. The 230 watt-17CL56 adapter alone weighs just as much as a MacBook Air and the laptop itself is with nearly 3.9 kilograms also no light weight.

The test results show how big the difference is between the desktop and laptop chips. The fastest mobile Nvidia-gpu from the moment turns out to be pretty similar with the GTX 760, which Nvidia brought out at the end of June. The 780 m is in most games a bit slower, but the difference is not enormous. In sleeping Dogs is the 780 m even faster than the GTX 760; quite an achievement for the laptop-gpu.

BTO X-Book

The GTX 780 m thus appears to be a true desktop replacement; NVIDIA’s fastest scores in the heavy benchmarks, which we normally only run on desktop cards, well and cannot be stopped by anti-aliasing. The GTX 765 m does; applying anti-aliasing does to the gpu in most cases and creates unplayable low framerates. How to turn off anti-aliasing does wonders and ensures that the frame rates shoot up.

Compared to the Nvidia GeForce mobile 600 series has a number of fast video cards released. The cheaper GTX 765 m performs per benchmark differently and it lay only in Alien vs Predator off against comparable chips from the previous generation.

The GTX is 780 m in the mobile benchmarks Lord and master and the discerning gamer which ample wallet features with the 780 m absolutely the fastest mobile gpu at the moment. This allows the mobile gpu compete with desktop GPUs of a year old: a pretty impressive performance. The 765 m presents itself less as a desktop replacement, but can be used for games, provided that the settings are not changed.
