Diablo was intended as a turn-based role-playing and would ‘expansion disks’ gain

David Brevik, cofounder of Blizzard North and creator of the Diablo series, the original pitch has released the first Diablo game. The document from 1994 describes a turn-based role-playing game and an extensive system of extensions reminiscent of TLC.

Diablo 1 The document consists of eight pages and is held by Condor. That was the name of the game studio founded in 1993, nine months before Diablo was released in December 1996 was bought by Blizzard. The pitch Diablo describes as a turn-based RPG with isometric perspective. That first is remarkable, because Diablo eventually became a hack-and-slash -rpg where players do not have to wait for their turn.

The document describes the Dynamic Random Level Generation system, which is the heart of the game should provide. With this technique, which was actually implemented in the game dungeons are randomly generated.

The pitch is not only the basis of Diablo described, a comprehensive marketing plan will be explained in detail for the release of expansion packs, reminiscent of what we today know as dlc. These expansion packs would consist of a disc with new items, creatures and levels, and they may also contain an information card.

In total there would be 16 or 32 different extensions, with each package example one rare sword and three unusual items. By installing the disc, these items get into the game, but the player they would have to find it in a dungeon. The document suggests that perhaps placing one of the goodies directly into the inventory of the players, for ‘immediate satisfaction.

The expansion discs are expected to cost $ 4.95, and preferably should be placed next to the cash register to stimulate impulse purchases. The marketing strategy, according to the pitch provide additional income in the long term with minimal effort. The paper presents the system as unique in the computer game industry, but the authors say that the physical card game Magic: The Gathering has served as inspiration.

The ‘dlc’ plan nothing ended up. Diablo appeared in late 1996, but the proposed expansions never came. However, appeared in 1997 Diablo: Hellfire, an extension that was made by Sierra Entertainment. This expansion added a new storyline, various items and the Monk class far.
