A team of five OpenAI bots trained for the Dota 2 game had to compete in a match against a professional team of human opponents. In the coming days, two more games will follow against other professional teams.

The Brazilian team called paiN Gaming managed to beat the bots of OpenAI Five in a 51-minute game . The bots did well in terms of knocking down opponents; through coordinated attacks they managed to score quite a bit of kills . The bots also eliminated more opponents than the winners at the end of the game .

The team of the professionals turned out to be better on a strategic level and partly won the game. An AI researcher from the British University of Falmouth said in a short comment on Twitter that the bots are very good in the actions from moment to moment, but according to him they are still pretty bad in the field of macro-decisions.

As with previous recent gigs by the OpenAI bots, where they won, among other things, semi-professionals and a team that consisted largely of professionals , the game against paiN Gaming was subject to a number of limitations. That is still necessary, because in the game Dota 2 there are still too many combinations and possibilities for artificial intelligence.

One of the limitations is that the response time of the bots is set at 200ms, which has been done in particular to give the human players more chance. Also, only eighteen of the more than one hundred heroes could be chosen. Moreover, the technicians behind the OpenAI bots with paiN Gaming agreed that the chosen teams had to be balanced; the heroes were chosen before the game.

OpenAI’s fight against paiN Gaming was a single match that is part of a best of three . In the coming days, the bots have to take on again against two other professional Dota 2 teams. The OpenAI Five competitions take place in the framework of The International, the annual Dota 2 tournament.

OpenAI Five actually consists of five neural networks. The bots have been trained for several months by playing against themselves every day; in an accelerated way that was good for 180 years of playing time every day.
