An autonomous flying drone managed to land on the roof of a car driving 75 kilometers per hour. The delicate operation was made by researchers at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt DLR.

The system that the drone used to land on the car is designed for non-military operations in the field, such as communication purposes and sensing changes remotely. The autonomous system can for example be coupled to an ultra-light, solar-powered airplane that in the stratosphere flying at more than twenty kilometers altitude to supplement conventional satellite systems. It could also be used in emergencies and for providing data on climate change.

The ultra light aircraft powered by solar energy can fly at altitudes of more than twenty kilometers and stay several weeks in the air as long as they are light enough. This unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs can do fine without landing gear, so the weight of it can be filled by all kinds of measuring equipment.

The device used is a twenty-kilogram electric fixed wing aircraft. The tests took place in Bavaria, Germany. Landing on the car was done on a special platform with optical beacons on the roof of the car. With which the aircraft beacons on the roof with a precision of centimeters fifty countries. The platform on the car mat four by five meters. While countries had to move at the same speed auto and drone.
