Dutch call minutes prove expensive in Europe

Nowhere in the European Union are calling minutes as expensive as in the Netherlands, according to research by the European Commission. A call minute costs in the Netherlands averaged 14.7 cents, more than seven times as much as in Lithuania.

Average, a call minute in the European Union 9.1 cents; Netherlands there is 14.7 cents per minute well above. Belgium, too, averaging 13.8 cents per call minute, is relatively expensive. It is striking that countries especially in the east of the European Union have low rates for calling minutes: the seven cheapest countries are all in Eastern Europe. Lithuania is an average of 1.9 cents per minute the cheapest.

According to European Commissioner Neelie Kroes, the large price differences can not be explained by differences in quality or by higher costs that providers have to make. Also a difference in the purchasing power of consumers, according to Kroes no explanation. The politician stressed that the introduction of a merged telecom market, which Kroes is currently working, would improve the situation.
