Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets has done raids on companies behind dating sites with fake profiles where visitors have to pay per received message. The regulator investigates whether there is a misrepresentation or that other rules are being violated.

The ACM does not announce which companies have been the subject of raids. Nor can the regulator say anything about the results or when the investigation has been completed. These are companies that maintain dating websites on which visitors pay per message. According to the regulator, visitors often do not know that they are fake profiles with chat operators who get paid for the messages sent.

The ACM says to investigate such websites because the visitors are often ‘vulnerable consumers’. They pay a lot of money for such services and do not get the meeting they expect. The dating websites often mention that there may be false profiles. The regulator has put a page on ConsuWijzer that helps consumers to recognize such sites.
