Dutch scientists manipulate photographs form for quantum network




Researchers from the Eindhoven University of Technology have found a way to gain control within a billionth of a second in the form of photons. The experiment is of importance for the development of information transfer between quantum computers.

The scientists at the TU / e and the FOM provided a photonic crystal of semiconductor material that can emit photons. Such quantum dot crystal researchers call an optical cavity and the crystal acts as a filter. By providing an extremely short electrical pulses, they determined how the quantum dot interacts with the resonant cavity, and how the photon is emitted. By alternating the strength, they could thereby determine the shape of the photon.

This manipulation of the transmission has been done before, but never so fast. “The energy of a photon extends only about one nanosecond, so if you want to change something, you must do so within that time,” explains research leader Andrea Fiore TU Eindhoven. He thus makes the comparison with the shutter of a camera.

The experiment is a step forward in the development of a quantum Internet: it brings very efficient exchange of photons closer. The precise control is required in order to achieve a symmetrical form of photons. By nature, have photons that are emitted by atoms not symmetrical shape, but for information transfer is that will be required. Scientists are now experimenting with the production of some, manipulate photons that can be used in the long term to encode information.

This should in turn lead to a quantum network. One of the intended goals of quantum computers is that they are going to be used for strong encryption and cracking encryption. A quantum network must ensure the secure transmission of quantum information.
