Dutch scientists want faster supercomputer

The speed of the supercomputer institute Surf Sara needs to be accelerated, so find Dutch scientists. This is because foreign competitors quickly improve their equipment, which will run behind Netherlands possible.

A group of 60 scientists led by Professor Simon Portegies Zwart has filed a petition with the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, as message De Volkskrant. Thus they hope to tease out money for an upgrade of the supercomputer of Surf Sarah. The cost is around 100 million, but no commitments yet made about the availability of it: the last few years there would be a structural shortage of money received by Surf Sara to pay for the upgrade and there are financial shortages.

With an upgrade to the Dutch scientists to ensure that the supercomputer maintains its position in the ranking of fastest supercomputers. The fear is that the equipment of Surf Sara end of next year can not participate, thereby Netherlands slipping in the rankings. That could then ensure that Dutch scientists have no computing more foreign supercomputers. Netherlands would be a ‘slow’ supercomputer not qualified enough for more international cooperation, thinks Black.

Possibly the government does provide a contribution to Surf Sara the required finances. Commenting allows the Ministry of Economic Affairs that, we look for a solution. However, more concrete information was not given.
