Dutch Wikipedia celebrates 15 years

The English version of Wikipedia is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary Sunday. The very first article published in the online encyclopedia, entitled ‘Definition’ knows, but since there are added over 1.8 million items.

By reaching the age of 15 years, the Dutch Wikipedia about six months younger than the English version, which was first established in January 2001. To mark the anniversary, the Dutch Wikipedia team investigated the oldest article; which is the article ‘Definition’, followed by ‘Olleke Bolleke. In addition, notes the online encyclopedia that the article ‘Oldest human being’ is most often processed with 7024 operations. What is the most visited Wiki page, the organization has not been disclosed.

In total, the Dutch Wikipedia has 1.8 million articles, but that number is increasing steadily. Incidentally, the English version has considerably more content, more than five million articles. Jointly Wikipedia the 292 language versions over 40 million items. The online encyclopedia is one of the most popular websites in the world. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide visit the site every month, while more than 70,000 volunteers work in writing the content.

American entrepreneur Jimmy Wales founded Wikipedia, along with Larry Sanger. An earlier version of the online encyclopedia called Nupedia was still composed by a team of editors. But then Wales came into contact with the wiki concept, and Wikipedia was born.
