easy to get ready-made phishing websites and convincing

On hacker forums, the ready-to-use phishing website appears to be on the rise. The NOS concludes from its own research that a phishing-furnished copy of a website from a Dutch or Belgian bank is very easy to buy and use.

NOS tech editor Joost Schellevis managed to buy a counterfeit ABN page on a hacker forum for 262 euros, complete with software that logs the login data. According to Schellevis, the web page was ‘an almost perfect imitation of the ABN Amro site’, with very few misspellings. These ready-to-use phishing websites require little technical knowledge to deploy. “Basic knowledge of php and web hosting is enough”. For converted 620 euros he was able to buy a phishing copy of SNS, ING, Rabobank and ABN Amro.

In a test environment, the phishing website that the NOS had purchased actually worked. Two different security researchers confirm to Schellevis that the phishing website matches those who encounter them in the wild. The NOS also received a used copy of such a phishing site. The logs showed that 272 users had been kicked in a month.

Richard Verbrugge of the ABN Amro states to the NOS that this form of fraud is currently by far the most popular. The other banks from which phishing variants can be purchased, such as SNS, ING and Rabobank, also see this tactic. According to them, phishing declined in recent years, but it is increasing again nowadays. The police also sees this.

On the hacker forum where the site comes from, we even work with a feedback system. The seller that the NOS had to deal with, has 97 reviews, mostly positive. To his bitcoin address in the past year already 25,000 euros in cryptomunt transferred. The site also offered phishing variants from German, Australian and British banks, as well as Facebook login pages, WhatsApp, Instagram and bitcoin exchanges. Finally, even developers could be hired to simulate very specific log-in pages for spear phishing.
